Depression


            Depression is one of the most common mental disorders affecting 340 million people in the world today, accounting for a full 10% of productive years lost throughout the world. No one is immune from depression. It occurs in people of all social classes, all countries and all cultural settings. One in four women and one in ten men can expect to develop depression during their lifetime, but it's not just adults who suffer, depression affects at least one in fifty children under twelve and one in twenty teenagers. .
             This article depicts how depression is an increasingly, a major workplace issue. Depression costs employers $44 Billions dollars a year in lost productivity alone. The vast majority of that $44 Billion loss in productivity comes from presenteeism, the many people with depression show up for work but not function at full capacity, some do not return phone calls, other do not follow up on new business leads, over all turning in poor quality work. Many come in late and some leave early, a portion never return from lunch. Thirty percent of working women suffering from depression either quit or lose there jobs. .
             Mary Jo West, a broadcast journalist starts to notice depression when only 47% of women diagnosed with depression seek help right away. Most think they can deal with the symptoms on their own. She noticed depression came into play when stress from the workplace began to affect her life. Working late, co-workers, dead lines, and other outside forces can be a big influence on depression. At first she didn't want anyone to know that she was depressed, she saw it as a weakness that she had to beat. As years passed it had changed her and her life all together. She says that there was a twelve year period where she lived in eleven different houses and had two ex-husbands. This shows how depression is a mental illness that brings chaos to ones life. .
             Depression is chemical imbalance in the brain that can be corrected with medication or therapy.
