Critical Thinking

Erving Goffman invented the term Dramaturgy to explain the almost theatrical performance that people put on when they are in the midst of other people.
The grocery store for example is an excellent setting to see how Goffman's dramaturgical analysis works. If you can imagine walking into a grocery store to pick up a few things after having a horrible day. You would still put on a face that would not show your discontent from the days problems. You obviously would not do that in front of your friends, family, or loved ones you would let them see your upset side. The grocery store though is different because you want the public to not view you as always angry but a good person like you usually are. You would want everyone that you came across whether it be the cashier or even someone you just walk by in the aisle to think of you in some sort of way depending on you. Another one of Goffman's ideas comes into play at this point and that is the presentation of self. This is basically an individual's efforts to create specific impressions in the minds of others. And that is exactly what people try to achieve whenever they are among strangers.
             2. I believe the main reason that the U.S, one of the richest countries in the world has not taken initiative in helping poor children is because almost all of the poor children live with a single parent. And most of those parents don't have full-time jobs. I"m sure that if the kids were poor and completely homeless then more sympathy would be shown to them from their society. The reason mainly that these kids aren't given any assistance is because their parents have been categorized as lazy, for not working full-time to support their family and this isn't always the case because they have young children who they need to be with at home. As a country our efforts I think are spread all over the world trying to fight poverty there when we can't even take care of our own citizens.
