Life in Traditional India

Imagine a place where a caste system rules the life of its people, where no matter how hard one works the caste one is in decides their life and where cow dung is considered a magical healer. That place is India. Within a country so far from the modern world, people live strictly by religion and tradition, by following their castes. It is that, that keeps them strong and has helped them survived for hundreds of years.

Originally, there were four castes. The brahmans, kshatryiyas, vaiœyas, and the sudras. The lowest of all the castes is the untouchables who were not one of the original four but still considered one of the major castes. Each class represents a part of the Creator. The brahmans are thought to have come from his mouth, the kshatryiyas from the arms, the vaishyas from the thighs and the sudras from the feet.

Modern Indian society had over 3000 different castes and sub castes, “the fourfold caste is merely a theoretical division of society…it is a sociological fiction.” Only two things separate the modern castes from the originals, and the things that separate them are only words. There are two names to represent the different worlds Varna meaning the first four and Jati representin

As the world spins the people upon it continue their lives onward. Within a village, the two separate roles and lives of men and women can be as different as day and night. Each was born to so different things in the world. The birth of any child can be a joyous or devastating event all depends on what kid is to be had.

The lowest of all castes were called the untouchables they were made up of many different sub castes the most common of which was the candaas. The life of someone in such a caste would be considered almost unbearable by American standards. Hated so much and considered so impure, members of the caste would carry “clappers” as to warn off any high caste group of their whereabouts so they may not be polluted. If the mistake were made of even accidentally coming within the eyesight of an upper caste human they could be beaten unconscious therefore the untouchables made sure to avoid any such incidents and lived their lives being though of as the “vilest dregs of the human species”.

The choosing of a bride is a long running custom. Usually the parents and a third person arrange a marriage. The third person is normally called “the go between” and does just what their name means, they speak to both parents in order to strike a match. To help add value to the girl her parents add a dowry of as much as they can afford to pay the fellows family. In some cases, the money is not enough to cover the girl’s status and other factors made come in, if she is pretty or works well might also help in the matter. Once the bride and groom are decided on, the marriage takes place shortly after. Parents and friends of both sides show up to honor the event. The girl does not look at her husband as they sit together during the ceremony, nor does he look at her both young and sometimes scared they simply wait to see what the future holds for them each hoping for the best that life can give them.

One of the least valuable castes was the sudras. These people had no chance of ever moving up during the life they had being a sudra. Looked d upon for past sins they had to work for the wealthy landowners just to survive. They were paid well enough and treated decently for the most part because of the laws protecting them. Minor taxation was given to them but the people did have to do forced labor for the country once or twice a month. Obviously, the want was great to die and move on to a better life.
