Napoleon and Stalin
What is totalitarianism? Totalitarianism is, from the dictionary definition, relating to a political regime based on subordination of the individual to the state and strict control of all aspects of life. Old Major, is a boar that could resemble Lenin who started the Russian Revolution. Also, Napoleon, resembling Stalin, seems to have the same characteristics. Snowball, seems to resemble Trotsky because he fights for power with Napoleon after Old Major dies just as Trotsky did with Stalin after Lenin died. The events that would show the relationship between Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution is the Great Purge, collective system, and the destruction of religion.I feel that because of totalitarianism, Russia and Animal Farm did not become the utopia people or animals had hoped for. Instead, it corrupted the rulers and destroyed many innocent lives. In Animal Farm Napoleon ruled through fear, as did Stalin in his time. They both also ruled through deception by twisting things around so that they look good. Lastly, both lived in luxury while their people suffered in famine. In the book Animal Farm, a pig named Napoleon used a government called totalitarianism to rule Jones's manor. This form of government leaves all the p
Napoleon and Stalin both share another characteristic with each other. They lived in luxury while their people starved to death and died of disease. In Animal Farm one of the animals noticed that Napoleon did not seem to be losing weight but actually gaining! This is because Napoleon was taking away most of the food from the other animals to feed himself and his loyal friends. They covered this up by telling the animals lies that they were actually eating more when they were not. Also, Napoleon then moved into Jones's house and started to use everything in it. He used things such as the bed and dinning table. Although these were against the old rules he had Squealer paint over the old ones and write new rules to fit Napoleon's desires. After that Napoleon even started to drink the alcohol that Jones had stored in the basement of the house. The pigs also did not have to work as hard as the others do, because they said they were "supervising." While Napoleon had all this luxury the other animals had to sleep on the ground, eat less than they had when Jones was the owner of the manor so that the pigs would have enough to eat, and worked extremely hard for their small portion of the food. This seems just like Stalin. Stalin had lived in great luxury in his house, which looked like a palace. He also had parties with much food and drink to feed those people whom he was close with. This does not seem right that Stalin can live in luxury while his people suffer. Same with Napoleon. They both ignored their people and only did what was good for them. Stalin and Napoleon both manipulated their people so that they could stay in power. They used propaganda to gain popularity among their people. Such as Napoleon, he used Squeal
