Organizational behavior is essential ingredient to any successful workforce. Organizational behavior examines the organization as a whole, and individuals from a holistic viewpoint. Organizational behavior applies various disciplines of study together to work for the good of the organization. Some individuals in the status quo would argue that organizational behavior is too “touchy-feely” and that a more technical aspect of an organization would lead to better production. This focus only on one aspect of the organizational culture would not lead to an organization that was open to change, and productive. Instead there needs to be a balance between the different viewpoints. Organizations must understand and develop the skill level needed for all levels of employment as well as incorporate and apply organizational behavior for an optimal operational success.
A study and knowledge of values by an organization can lead to individuals with high motivational levels and hence high production. Values and attitudes are at the basis of organizational behavior. By having an understanding of these ideas it can create a basis for the application of organizational behavior. Although these are not the only reasons for organizational behavior, they are significant. In another report in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology (2003), the importance of certain value characteristics are stated and their importance to the idea of organizational citizenship behavior. The journal states five characteristics, altruism, conscientiousness, civic virtue, courtesy, and sportsmanship. Through these characteristics different aspects of the employee’s behavior can be related, defined, and explained. For example, the author provides examples for altruism and civic virtue “An example of Altruism is helping a co-worker who has fallen behind is his or her work. Examples of Civic Virtue include attending meetings, keeping abreast of organizational decisions and issues, and expressing opinions. Sportsmanship refers to tolerating the inconveniences and annoyances of organizational life without complaining and filing grievances. (p. 283).” These “touchy-feely” characteristics are all pertinent to the working of an organization. By taking a technical viewpoint with the organization, the aspects of the employees and managers are left out and then the behavior and culture of the organization may decline.
