When the emperor of Qin set up the first centralized power within the whole country, China started its more than 2000 years feudal history. One of the key issues of Confucianism is to establish the hierarchy mechanism for the emperor. Hence, the consciousness of power distance is rooted in most of the Chinese minds. China is a high power distance country. It is very easy to get people to do things by giving them order from their leaders. Even if the directives of their leaders are wrong or doubted, people will usually comply with them. For example, Jiang Zemin was the president of China whose "Three representatives" ideology had been written into Chinese Communist Constitution. As Literature city reported, “…books of Jiang's 'Three representatives' ideology were sold in everywhere in China. Although these books are half price of the other books, only few were sold for personal use. Most of the books were used for the government instruction due to the order from the central government.” (2003) However, in Western countries, people might probably argue with their leaders to find the correct judgement, if they think the decision is wrong or not suitable. In fact, few Chinese may argue with their leaders because the actual result would cause some negative effects. Therefore, power is more likely obligatory and absolute in Chinese society. As FTF (face to face) pointed out that Chinese leaders were like king, and their position was the embodiment of king's authority (2003). All points discussed above refer to the general phenomena in China. People’s behavior varies in different cities due to the distinctive influence of politics and economy. For instance, Beijing is the political and cultural center of China, so it is highly politics-oriented. Hence, making people to do things by power may be more efficient. However, some southern cities of China are mainly focus on economic development, such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, therefore, they are more economy-oriented and material incentives are more efficient. nce that money is important in China as a motivator for employees.
