Inequality Falsifies the American Dream

Humans spend their entire lives focused on the possibility of reaching their dreams. Usually these dreams consist of things like fame or fortune or love, and for some people these dreams seem to be unattainable. The whole point of the term "The American Dream" was to create a phrase that showed people how much America was centered around people reaching their dreams. This may have seemed true to some, but it is not very accurate for a majority of the country. The system of our society makes it very difficult for people who, in general, are not white, straight, and males, to achieve their goals. This is evident in the examples of LeAlan and Lloyd and their trials through the ghetto. This world is much more difficult to conquer if you are a part of a minority group. Most people seem to come to terms with the fact that, despite the promise of America, they will most likely never reach their dreams. Those who have not come to terms with the impossibility of their dreams can be led to destroying their own lives and the lives of those around them, like Fitzgerald illustrated in A Diamond as Big as the Ritz. These are only a few documents that illustrate the hopeless whirlpool of fantasy that is the American Dream. All of these works, plus a little observation of the world around us, proves that the American Dream is just that, a fanciful dream that is rarely achieved in righteous ways and is extremely discriminating despite preaching about equality. .
A major issue that presents itself in the debate of the American Dream is the unavailability of it. The American Dream is usually only attainable to those that are within the groups that society has deemed privileged enough. Most people are confined to the areas that they have come from, like Mathilde. "She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy and luxury. She suffered from the poorness of her house, from its mean walls, worn chairs, and ugly curtains.
