Impact of Control on Business Management

The four basic functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Planning is the setting of objectives and figuring out how to achieve those objectives. Organizing is the development of an organizational structure and allocation of personnel to ensure the accomplishment of objectives. Leading involves influencing others to accomplish the objectives. Control ensures performance does not deviate from standards. I will be discussing how control is affected by the three previous functions. I will also be writing about control by itself. Part of the planning phase consists of establishing objectives/goals. The planners must also make decisions about the best course of action for achieving those objectives. Without a goal in mind and a path laid out ahead, there would be no way to set useful performance standards. For instance; the goal is to get from Point "A"" to Point "Z," however, no direction is given. One could go from Point "A" " to "B"" to "C"" and so on until reaching "Z." If it were the intentions to reach "Z"" in the fewest stops the "A" directly to "Z" " with no interruptions would be the performance standard by which everyone would be measured.
Organizing is where individual jobs are defined and the chain of command is established. Here duties and responsibilities are designated and the manners as to how to perform these duties are established. These directly impact the performance standards as to which employees are held to. This is also where Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and regulations are created. Managers at all levels in the chain of command are involved in control to some degree. Everyone answers to their own boss and tries to please them by accomplishing the goals set before them. Effective leaders have a great understanding for their subordinates' personalities, feelings, values, attitudes and emotions. That being said, control, from a managerial standpoint, is not the manipulation of these values, personalities and emotions.
