Methods of Water Conservation

The earth is the most water-filled planet in the universe. As stated on the USGS website we have 332,500,000 cubic miles of water. From all the water that we have 96.5% of it is located in oceans the other 3.5% is located in rivers, lakes, ice caps, glaciers, or in the form of water vapor. Only 2.5% of that water is fresh water that is safe to drink. However that 2.5% will most likely drop in the next few years because the earth's temperature is rising which will cause the ice caps to melt. If we continue consuming our water irresponsibly we will be left with nothing. There are some very basic things that we can all do to help reduce our water usage. For example we can turn off the water when we brush our teeth. We can also install a new showerhead. A company named EVA is creating a new showerhead named EVA Smart Shower which is a Bluetooth controlled shower head that doesn't release any water until the water has reached your desired temperature. It also stops water flow by 30% when you step out from under the running water. The EVA Smart Shower will be available some time in the next year and will cost $100. If every household in America were to install one of these showerheads we could save up to three million gallons of water per year. An alternative to a showerhead would be a water efficient toilet. Water efficient toilets flush with 40% less water and compensate by shooting out air. As stated in the Bell Plumbing website, upgrading to a water efficient toilet can save between 11,000 and 35,000 gallons of water per year.
One way that we can help save fresh water is by creating new fresh water. A new process called desalinization removes salt from salt water making it as pure as fresh water. This process begins by removing water from the ocean in a way that is harmless to sea life. It is then put through a filter that removes large objects. Then the water passes through another set of filters that removes smaller objects.
