There are many different things that I do on a daily basis that harm not only myself, but the entire environment. Living the green lifestyle can be hard and often people, including myself, contemplate why bother? Just as Pollan said, even if we decide to do the right thing and plant a garden or chose to ride a bike instead of driving to work, there is always someone out there buying vegetables from the grocery store and leaving all the lights on when they leave the house. It seems to me that the thought "why bother" is part of the problem. Everyday people like you and me always feel like our contribution to living a greener lifestyle does not affect others, but that is where we are wrong. Not only does it help the environment, but it may rub off on our friends and family and help influence them to make better choices as well.
Every week I find myself in the grocery store buying fruits and vegetables. The produce you buy from the grocery store is almost always sprayed down with chemicals and shipped from a foreign country. According to Pollan, I've got to consider not only "food miles" but also whether the food came by ship or truck and how lushly the grass grows in New Zealand. After reading Pollan's article, I have realized how much this negatively impacts the environment and people around me. I am now going to start purchasing my produce from a farmers market and I hope to build a garden when the weather warms up. .
In the article, Pollan starts to talk about how people have their opinions on how our individual decisions will or will not make a difference. To paraphrase, Pollan describes how Michael Specter believes that personal decisions are not enough and that we need laws and money to make a real difference. Pollan goes on to say how he agrees with that statement, but says that it is not any less accurate to say that laws and money also cannot do enough. With this being said, it is safe to say that changing the environment is a big job, but with a little help from everybody I believe we can make the world a better place.
