How did Hitler plan to fight World War II
How did Hitler plan to fight the war? Did he get the war he wanted? These questions have been asked by numerous historians since the end of World War II, and by Weinberg, Bartov, and Overy thus far in our reading. The answer to these questions according to the reading appears to be yes and no. First, Hitler got to concentrate on one front at the beginning of the war because of the non-aggression pact he signed with the Soviets on August 23, 1939. Second, he got to concentrate on the west because of the agreement he signed with the Soviets as well. Third, although Hitler stated that he wanted to begin the war in 1942-43, he appears to have been ready for war in 1938. So the timing of the war thus becomes a factor. Fourth, although Hitler might have been ready for war that does not mean that Germany was. Hitler did not have the have a significant portion of the German population, nor his generals fully committed to the idea in of war 1938 or 1939. Add to these the factors the fact that Italy bungled every attempt at conquering territory (except for the fact that they took Albania), which caused Hitler to divert troops away from the eastern front to cover up the blunders of Mussolini; and this becomes the picture of war t
Initially, although the war might have started a little earlier than Hitler might have wanted, the German leader could not have been any happier with the results. His quick and essentially easy victories virtually eliminated any opposition to him at home. That meant that any generals or industrial leaders who might have had an inclination against Hitler’s plans, had their hopes squashed by the ineffectiveness of the French and British, the cooperation of the Soviets, and the success of German troops and their own military machinery. Obviously, Hitler also got the blessing of being able to fight the French and the British in a one-front war as well. By May 10, 1940 Hitler had taken the low countries of Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg and France as well. Why were the Germans able to do this? The British and French had declared war on Germany two days after Germany had begun the invasion of Poland, however by the time the Germans had taken France in May 1940; the British were still debating about war strategy in Parliament. The French and the British had fought a ‘phony war’ in the west, hence leaving Germany and Hitler ample opportunity to conquer not only the Poles but by the time Churchill had replaced Chamberlain as Prime Minister of Britain--- the Germans were sitting across the English Channel about to begin the Battle of Britain. The French and the British gave Hitler everything he had wanted before the war through treaties like the Munich agreement of 1938, and since the war began they gave him everything through indecisive action. Although, no one can blame the British and French for these actions because they wanted to keep the war at a distance away from them because of the horrors of World War I, the simple truth is it was their own faults for not reacting faster to the German Blitzkrieg. Another way in which the Japanese hurt the German war plan, was by the fact that the Japanese would not use their submarines to attack American lend-lease shipments to the Soviet Union, which were being sent across the Bering Strait. Here the Germans are attacking their enemy in the east, while the Soviets are being resupplied right under the nose of one of Germany’s allies. Needless to say this did not sit well with Hitler, or for that matter his war plan. In the end, Hitler initially did get the war that he wanted with the help of German war planners, the indecision of the French and the English, and the cooperation of the Soviet Union. However, Hitler’s decision to invade the Soviet Union before knocking out the British, coupled with ineffectiveness of the Tripartite Pact countries proved to much for the German war plan to handle. This led to Hitler not getting the war that he wanted, and the defeat of Germany in World War II.
