Family Relationships
A relationship between a parent and a child is very important. When that exist between a parent and child began to become questionable, the family relationship itself begins to diminish. In Sherman Alexie’s, “This is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” Alice Walter’s, “Everyday Use,” and David H. Lawrence’s “Rocking-Horse Winner,” the stories will each portray a different relationship between parent and child. The children can feel the resentment and the lack of love from their mother. The mother feels that her husband is unlucky, so the son, Paul tries to win his mother’s love by gambling. Paul becomes so obsessed with his gambling to the point he dies from it. He tried so hard to win his mother’s love that it cost him his life.
