The word Euthanasia comes from two Greek words meaning ‘good (easy) death’. The same issues are raised in suicide. However this time it is not the ‘self’ who is doing the killing. It has been seen as ‘mercy killing’ in the late 20th Century. This could also be described as letting the person die when there is no realistic hope of survival. The former is voluntary Euthanasia; the person concerned makes the decision. The latter is compulsory euthanasia. This is when family, friends, or doctors make the decision for the person who is concerned.
