Analysis of the multiple genre conventions of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” (Series one -Teachers Pet)

Genres are governed by conventions and these codes help us to recognise the genre of the program. Multi-genres differ from this style, as they contain the codes and conventions from a variety of different genres, making it harder to identify and group. For a multi-genre to be successive it must contain many different genres. “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” is a prime example of a multi-genre as it contains the multitude of different codes and conventions needed.

The conventions that are used within “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” are all represented through a series of codes in each individual episode. The typical conventions are constructed through the settings and location, cloths and make-up, colours, iconography and the final mise-en-scene of each episode.

The series is set in an American suburban town called “Sunnydale”, which instantly connotes a pleasant and happy middle class society, where nothing truly bad could ever happen. The main settings within this town are the high school where Buffy and her friends go to school, Buffy’s house and later on in the series “the magic shop”.

Buffy catches the teacher turning her head around 360 degrees. This is a refrence to William Friedkin's 1973 The Exorcist, where a 12-year-old girl is possessed by a demon that causes her body to engage in numerous unnatural acts, including projectile vomiting and rotating her head 360 degrees. With this Buffy finally figures it out Miss French is a praying mantis! Following her lead, Giles tries to get in touch with a friend in England who's an expert in the field, the only catch being that the man is institutionalized. Meanwhile, hacker par excellence Willow has found that Blayne's mother has reported him missing. Since it's Xander's turn to work with Miss French this afternoon, Buffy warns him, but he thinks Buffy is just jealous. Miss French gives Xander a drink as soon as he shows up. As he's getting woozy, he thinks he hears someone calling, but she ignores it. She takes his hand, and her arm turns into a praying mantis' foreleg. He promptly passes out, and he is dragged away by Miss French. When he comes to, he finds himself in a cage in Miss French's cellar, with Blayne in an adjoining cage. Surrounded by headless bodies in cages, he calls to Miss French, who is now completely converted to her giant-mantis form.

“Buffy The Vampire Slayer” is a successful multi-genre as it draws upon the genres of; horror, science fiction, comedy and action. It has sever
