The first means of communication that the general public had access to was the radio. Communication is a key element in Canada, a country with a scattered population over a large geographical distance. With the majority of Canadians living close to the proximity of the American border, it is obvious that American content has an impact on Canadian lives. With the introduction of radio, it was feared that Canada would surrender its culture to American domination. Thus, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was created to deliver Canadian programming and to ensure that Canada’s sense of identity is not lost. Through, its surpassing of Canadian programming requirements, its ability to connect the Nation from coast to coast and its success in relating to each individual culture, it is evident that the CBC Radio ultimately succeeds in preserving Canada’s national pride. As a neighbour to the world’s greatest superpower, it is doubtful that Canadians will ever be able to escape influences from American culture. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was introduced to preserve Canadian culture and maintain a sense of national identity. The amount of Canadian content that can be heard on the CBC airwaves follows programming standards and evidently surpasses them while striving to appeal to all Canadian citizens. Geographically, the CBC has ultimately succeeded in reaching all of Canada and specific locations abroad in order to inform and educate all people. Culturally, the CBC strives to maintain and further develop Canada’s language origins. Service is offered in not only Canada’s national languages but other dialects as well. New developments such as, the television have offered the CBC a greater opportunity to preserve Canadian culture, but ultimately, the nationalistic pride that many Canadians possess today would not have been possible without the introduction of radio and the development of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. With the start of radio, the geographical size of Canada provided many obstacles in terms of reaching the entire nation. An early coverage survey displayed the fact that the radio network provided effective coverage to only forty-nine percent of the population and this was mainly in urban areas (“CBC/SRC”). To improve coverage, the CBC proposed to build four new high-powered regional transmitters across Canada. By the end of 1937, 50,000-watt transmitters had been built near Toronto and Montreal, which increased the national coverage to seventy-six percent. In 1939, the third and fourth transmitters were constructed on the prairies and in the Maritimes. Studies were underway to gain reception in difficult areas, such in British Colombia and national coverage was almost at ninety percent (“CBC/SRC”). The CBC was successful in reaching almost all of Canada but this was not enough. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was determined to provide the greatest amount of coverage over any distance. During the wartime, the CBC was one of the first networks to develop and use mobile equipment. Their recordings from overseas were heard on Canadian networks and were also used by the BBC and movie newsreel companies. The war also resulted in the CBC becoming international with short-wave service. In 1943, two fifty-kilowatt transmitters were constructed near Sackville, New Brunswick.
