American schools v.s Russian schools

Russian Schools vs. American Schools

The main reason why I moved to America was to get the best education that I can get. I was scared to go to school, based on the fact that I couldn’t speak the language very well. I went for the first 8 years of school back in Russia and the rest of my education is now continuing in America. I came to find many differences between the school systems in both counties that I had to get used to.

Schools in Russia are very strict and in my opinion are a lot harder. When a child is six or seven yours old, they have to take a test to see if they can make it into a regular class or an accelerated class. Then there are sub-schools: primary (grades 1-4), secondary (grades 5-9), and senior (grades 10-11.) All sub-schools are inside one building, so it is very hectic inside. School starts on September 1 every year and we have a special assembly prepared in front of school. That is when we see our teacher, chat with our classmates, go inside the school, get into our classroom, find an assigned seat and write down our schedule for our first semester in our “diaries.” A diary is something that every student must have, that is where he or she writes down the homework and also where te

In America there are 12 grades and you need to maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher and also have 20 credits. Students have counselors who help them to decide what is the best for them to take to meet the requirements for the graduation. Students have a big variety of after school activities to choose from and also a big variety of which college they would like to go to.

During school, students are learning heavy-duty material. Students take a lot of subjects, but the subjects were already chosen; therefore, we couldn’t pick which subjects we wanted to take. Everyone in his or her classroom have the same schedule. Some subjects are: Russian Literature, Russian Language, Mathematics, Algebra and Geometry (mostly studied in senior classes), Physics, Chemistry, Russian History, World History, Geography, Biology, Foreign Languages (English or German) Physical Education, Cooking, Arts and Crafts (for girls), Manual Work (for boys), Art of Drawing, Music, and Astronomy. In class, since students know each other (most of the times since the 1st grade) there are a lot of jokes and humor during class, but only when appropriate. If students do not behave, the teacher would get mad and would discipline the class in a very angry manner.

I think that in the future, all countries should have the same school systems. Since there are a lot of immigrants coming to America from all over the world, it would be nice for them to continue their lives rather than starting from the beginning. Immigrants who were doctors in their country now have to go through years of school and waste money and time on re-educating themselves to prove to American hospitals that he or she really is a doctor. I
