There are many ways "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" by Ernest Miller Hemingway could be interpreted. One Question to be interpretated is weather Margot Macomber shoots and kills her husband Francis by accident or if Margot shoots at him on purpose to kill Francis. I believe that Margot Macomber kills her husband Francis Macomber. on purpose to get out of their relationship. The new sence of courage Francis has after he kills a buffalo could also have threathened and intimidated Margot to the point where she had no choice but to kill Francis. Baym's opinion is that Margot could of been scared of Francis,with his new confidence, becoming the type of man who would find it easy to oppress her. Beck's opinion is that,"Francis change, is what Margot really fears is the challence of evolving emotionally and building a truly sound basis of union." In the story the narrator tells us that Margot is "very afraid of something" after the buffalo hunt. It could of be she realizes she will never have true power over Francis, so she decides to kill him. Margot notices that Francis starts to get more confidence because of hunting with Wilson so she tries to put that to an end by putting them down after the hunt. She then tries to put Francis and Wilson down after their car chase of the buffalo by saying,"It seemed very unfair to me" because they were using a vehicle. She also questions Wilson's values by telling him he is "lovely" at hunting,"that is if hunting is lovely." By trying to put them down Francis and Wilson, she may have hoped to show Francis his new found courage is not significant. Ernest Miller Hemingway's story " The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" could be interpreted in different ways. My interpretation of the story is Margot shoots Francis on purpose to kill him. She got so mad and could not handdle Francis new courage and confidence that she could not take it and she shot and kills Francis.
