Heroes

Who is your hero? When asked that question, some people might answer by saying that their parents, or doctors or teachers are their heroes. However, a lot of people will answer the question by saying that celebrities and athletes are their heroes. This is because celebrities and athletes are the ones who are most displayed and shown through movies and television. They are looked up to and respected and they are the main interest in the society today because the media is a major aspect of American peoples’ lives. People want to become successful like these celebrities and athletes and they want to live as happy and as comfortably as them as they seem to live. However, this should not be the case, since athletes and celebrities do not fit exactly under the category of what a hero is defined as.
So then, what exactly is a hero? A hero is someone who is admired for his achievements and his noble qualities. It is someone who is brave and courageous and extremely devoted to something. A hero is a genuine person who cares for the well being and prosperity of others without seeking any attention for fame or redemption. Someone who goes beyond one’s expectations may be considered a hero. A heroic person must be willing to

There are some respected and admired heroes who have bad sides to their lives. Darryl Strawberry is an example of an athlete who has bad sides to him. Strawberry was a hero because he was a great baseball player. He established a Dodger record of 28 home runs by a left-handed batter. However, even though he was considered a hero to many people, he had bad qualities during his career. He had a drug problem because he was addicted to cocaine and he got arrested many times for his possession of it. This led to his suspension from baseball for the year 2000 and his colon cancer returned. Another example of this kind of situation is seen through Mark McGwire. People consider him a hero because of his popular seventy homeruns in a season. However, there are many bad sides to this athlete. McGwire had been using androstenedione, a type of steroid that boosts testosterone levels. He denied his use of steroids, but when McGwire got injured, people suggested that it might have been the result of using steroids to overly build his body up. The dangers of these bad sides in the athletes are that people don’t even know these athletes personally and that they only see the good sides in them. People don’t know everything that is actually going on in their lives, such as drug problems and serious issues and they only see the good qualities about their heroes.

There are certain good sides and bad sides of athletes and celebrities. The good sides of them are that they are successful, popular, admired, and respected. They can basically buy anything they want and still have enough money to live the rest of their lives without working. They get attention and are able to meet other rich celebrities and stars. However, a major bad side of athletes and celebrities is that when they are being viewed by the public everyday, they are constantly faced with media and public scrutiny. Everything celebrities do is either shown in the media or written about in newspapers and magazines. They have no privacy and their actions are constantly judged by the public. There are dangers of this also because even when a celebrity or athlete does something wrong, it is completely displayed out of proportion to the public.
