Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the area of computer science focusing on creating machines that can engage on behaviors that humans consider intelligent. The ability to create intelligent machines has intrigued humans since ancient times and today with the advent of the computer and 50 years of research into AI programming techniques, the dream of smart machines is becoming a reality. Researchers are creating systems which can mimic human thought, understand speech, beat the best human chess player, and countless other feats never before possible. I focused on this area for my capstone because I thought it would be an original idea and also would be interesting to investigate and determine if artificial intelligence is a good concept or a bad to the human life. I wish to accomplish how it came about, the reasoning behind artificial intelligence, and where I think it will go in the future based on my research on this topic. Artificial intelligence has been around for longer then most people think. We all think that artificial intelligence has been in research for about 20 years or so. In all actuality after thousands of years of fantasy, the appearance of the digital computer, with its
The history of artificial intelligence all started in the 3rd century BC. Chinese engineer Mo Ti created mechanical birds, dragons, and warriors. Technology was being used to transform myth into reality.1 In the last decade, I have noticed computers have gotten faster, less expensive, and more technologically advanced. Biologists and neuroscientists have focused this computing power on human brain and DNA research, and this has led to important discoveries about how human beings think and develop. Artificial intelligence scientists have applied this information to AI research. For example, scientists now know that the human brain is made up of a series of interconnected cells (neurons). With this information, AI researchers have created artificial neural networks that imitate the brain's structure. Scientists feed these networks so that, like the human brain, the neural network evolves and adapts to solve new problems.6 Some of the more obvious limitations could have happened during some interviews that I have conducted. The kids that I have interviewed verbally could have lied or just said what they thought would be cool, or what everyone else was saying. Another problem with what I have presented is that information I have addressed. Being that I got pretty much all my information and research from the web, those websites could be wrong. We all know that what is on the net is not all ways the most true thing to get your info. Some of the information was a little different from Website to Website, but the majority was the same. I have also asked two teachers that I thought that would have some education on this topic. Mrs. Ellerman was my first pick because she is the computer, careers and information technology teacher. I thought Mrs. Ellerman would have a small understanding on what artificial intelligence is. As a matter of fact she did but and had a good point of view to make. Just the kind of information was looking for. I asked Mrs. Ellerman if she thought artificial intelligence was a positive or negative thing to our community. She said that it could be both. Positive in such a way because it can give adults and kids in the community some great opportunities. She goes on saying that it is how people would use the technology. If it got in the wrong hands than it may be used to make dangerous weapons of mass destruction.12
