Civic Responsibility

To this day, it is still difficult for me to define civic responsibility. There are so many ways to define it. My idea of civic responsibility is joining the military so that we can get a better appreciation of the things we hold dear. However, I will not discuss my argument for civic responsibility by using military enlistment as an example. I could go on forever about this – but I would have to write a book on it. I’m having a hard enough time writing this essay. My other ideas of civic responsibility are quite simple. The first one I will discuss involves being more active about environmental concerns. Equally important, the other one involves being a well-rounded individual by getting an education.

Back in my days in the Marine Corps, my fellow Marines would make fun of me if I expressed concerned about the environment, especially if I tried to do my part on recycling items that were to be recycled. They would make comments like, “Are you an advocate of the Green Party?” Those were fighting words – I’m not interested in politics in the least bit. However, I seem to care more about the environment than the average citizen. Let’s face it, the Marine Corps has a recycling progr

In closing, I encourage citizens to take a more active role in our deteriorating environment, and to understand how pursuing an education can help build a strong foundation for society in general. On the next Earth Day, I suggest you go outside and gaze upon the stars to think how you can help prevent the depletion of Mother Earth’s beautiful resources. If you see a candy wrapper on the floor, pick it up and throw in the trash. This doesn’t mean you have to go as far as picking up trash along the I-10 to do “your part”. On the same token, next time you get an assignment to work in a group rather than complain, think about the analytical and social skills you will learn by interacting with others which are the main ingredients to civic responsibility.

Therefore, it is our responsibility as citizens to show more respect for the environment and to express more concerns for the environmental harm we are causing Mother Earth. Because we, who live in the United States, have a modern republic where the government is structured of, by and for the people, we have the responsibility of interacting with our government to bring about beneficial change. Our government must change with the rapidly changing times we live in.

In New York City, where I grew up, it is not uncommon to see many neat stacks of newspapers and magazines lined up in every block waiting to be shipped somewhere for a more useful life other than going to a landfill. The same goes with plastic containers, glass bottles and the like. Recycling and care for the environment is more enforced in New York City than any other place I’ve ever been too. And it should be. It should be done everywhere, not just in the Capital of the Universe – New York City. New Yorkers do their part in civic responsibility by obeying these kinds of laws. Before I was a teen, this great city was implementing its new recycling laws. Being introduced to this concept at a young age, is probably why I take a such a stand on this issue.
