Artificial Intelligence
This paper attempts to explain some philosophical reasons behind the possibility or lack thereof about the realization of true artificial intelligence. It is my intention to state my reasons as to why I do not believe there is ever the possibility of creating true artificial intelligence. In order to have conscienceness, I state that a creature must be able to be aware of its environment, and it must be able to give responses to changes in its environment. Those responses must also be a creature’s own responses, based on its experiences throughout its life, not programmed responses based on a programmer’s written instructions. Machines however, are programmed. They are based on written responses to stimuli that have been programmed into their memories. These programs cannot be changed by the machine itself, they must be rewritten by a programmer in order to change. A human on the other hand can go beyond its own program, so to speak. An objection to this claim is that a human is itself programmed by the stimuli it has undergone throughout its life. But it is possible for a human to completely loose itself from what it has learned (or what some people consider to be programming). We know that a person can b
e taught their entire life to think and act in a certain way, but we also know that a person can go against that upbringing to say and act in anyway he or she wishes. A machine on the other hand, if programmed to say hello every time an operator presses the space bar, cannot make a decision to stay silent when that key is pressed. That response is hard copied into the “brain” of the computer. I say brain not meaning to compare it to a human mind, but instead to say brain as a computer’s control center. A human’s brain on the other hand is liquid in its ability to change itself in accordance to the world around it. Since a computer is programmed and not given conscienceness through its own self-discovery, a computer cannot be considered sentient. So can a computer become human in its computations? For a computer to become human in its processing, it must become emotional also. For to infer that a computer can become conscience, on must consider why it could become so. I have already claimed that for a computer to become conscience, its conscienceness must be based on human input, therefore that conscienceness must be emotional as human responses are emotional. So is this within the realm of possibility? I will grant that computers can have emotion. But these emotions would also have to be programmed in by a human and therefore given specific pathways in which to follow, therefore they can not be considered true emotions as they are not subject to liquid chan
