Evil

Sophocles" Oedipus Rex and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein dive deep into the mentality and well being of Oedipus, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and the monster. Evil, by definition, is wickedness or the quality of being morally bad and wrong. Evil seems to play a significant role in both stories bringing out each character's fatal flaws. However, evil is caused by the social milieu of each character; that is, no one is born evil, only their surroundings create such atrocities. Oedipus reigns as a noble king to Thebes, however, this is soon forgotten and ephemeral when he is soon discovered as the murderer of Laios, his legitimate father in which he was suppose to kill according to his fate. Dr. Frankenstein as well as the monster aspires for perfection and that is the creation of life from death of a human being and the search for being accepted for who one may be in the society respectively. While implementing these goals, both Frankenstein and the monster fall into their own hell, delirium, and madness. In any case, Frankenstein and Oedipus Rex in a sense create societal flaws, which in turn, causes character flaws of evil in both stories. In the end, there is an ongoing struggle, within each character, between good and evil, but most of the time good prevails over evil or so they say .
Sophocles" Oedipus Rex engenders a feeling of profound thought and meaning within Oedipus" mind. In order to understand the evil within Oedipus, we must delve deep into the psychology of Oedipus himself since the evil brewing within his mind is very much different from the normal evil we know to understand. His type of evil comes from fate; it seems that it was the will of the gods that bound him to his destiny. He will kill his father, king of Thebes, marry his mother, and bear children with her. His parents hears of this and decides to banish this illegitimate son of theirs hoping that it would die in the wilderness.
