The Meiji sent out officials to Europe and the United States to learn technologies, politics, economics, agriculture and military all of which was turned over quickly to modernized Japan. The government was transformed from the shogunate to model to a “highly centralized imperial rule, wielded by a handful of Meiji advisors, combined with limited representative institutions copied from the west.” The Japanese were also able to keep their traditional way of thinking and merge them with new western influences into a hybrid ideology. Strong traditions such as bushido and family ethics were found to be very applicable to the new centralized government and its vigorous industrialization.
