Abortion will forever be a fine-line issue that creates much controversy. Anti-abortionists will forever try to tell women that it is immoral to kill an unborn person, and that it is wrong in the eyes of God. However, this is incorrect. A woman deserves the right to choose; the right to decide whether or not she is ready to bring a child into this world. What makes pro-life supporters sound worse is when you consider that most women who do go through with an abortion have just made the most difficult decision of their lives. No one thinks that abortion is a wonderful thing. No one purposely gets pregnant just so they can terminate their pregnancy. Even though it is not murder, it still eliminates a potential person; a potential son or daughter. Abortion is a very emotional and difficult decision that leaves many women scared for life, and by having anti-abortionists telling them that it is murder, does not make the situation any easier. Abortion is not murder; it is an absolutely moral choice that any woman, wishing to control her own body, is entitled to. Abortion is a right and a choice that every woman is deserving of. The true answer to the abortion controversy is abstinence, and a higher moral standard on the young men and women of today to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

The question of whether or not the potential person is physically independent is a very controversial issue. Physical independence is not something that one is born with. The potential person is absolutely dependant on another human being for its continuous existence. “Throughout gestation the zygote-embryo-fetus and the mother’s body are symbiotically linked, existing in the same physical space and sharing the same risks” (Why Abortion is Moral). What the mother does affects the fetus just as when things go wrong with the fetus, it affects the mother. Anti-abortionists claim fetal dependence cannot be used as an issue in the abortion debate. They make the point that for years after birth a child is still dependent on its parents or guardians. Since no one would agree with killing a child because of its dependency on others, pro-life supporters claim it’s wrong to abort a fetus because of its dependence. What the anti-abortionists fail to do, however, is differentiate between physical dependence and social dependence. Physical dependence does not refer to meeting the physical needs of the child; that is classified as social dependence, which is where the child depends on society to feed, clothe and love it.
