Beowulf
The epic poem, Beowulf, is composed of three main divisions, and they each possess their own significance toward the outcome of the hero’s life. Each division of the poem contains a battle or struggle in which Beowulf had to overcome insurmountable odds if order to obtain victory. As Beowulf conquered his enemies, he became a distinguished hero, and was known throughout the world for his bravery and courage. The first main division begins on line 86, where we begin to learn about Hrothgar’s struggles with Grendel, “a powerful demon, a prowler through the dark … a fiend from hell.” It ends on line 1250 after Hrothgar rewards Beowulf for saving Heorot from the monster’s constant night attacks. Although this epic poem can be divided into three separate tales of Beowulf’s bravery, they combine to tell the tale of how Beowulf’s struggles and his conquests led him to be king of the Geats, and an honorable warrior known throughout the world as a hero. “They said that of all the kings upon earth/ he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.” The third main division takes place after Beowulf has become king of the Geats, and is now an old warrior.
