Ethics

Jones should not turn in her neighbor, Mr. Thompson, on the basic principles of ethics themselves. Jones should be compassionate towards Mr. Thompson and realize that he is the exact model of what prisoners should be when they come out of the prison system. It is clear that Mr. Thompson is sorry for what he had done and is repaying his debt to society in different ways.
The prison systems should be in place for the reform of their inmates and not for their punishment. It seems as though Mr. Taylor has gone through the prison system and done what they are so often criticized for not doing. He was reformed, whether he was there for the duration of his sentence or not. So not only would Mrs. Jones be punishing a man who seems to have bettered himself and done what prison is supposed to do. But she will also be cluttering an already full prison system. During the time that Mr. Thompson was in jail one could say that something had happened to change him and steer his life along the right path. His absence now has freed a space for the possibility of someone else to be helped and rehibilitated.
Mrs. Jones should show compassion to her neighbor. If everybody was to be more compassionate to just the person living next to them imagine the ramifications and how much more pleasant things would be. But not to digress. As the Dalai Lama states, "[A]ll the world's major religions stress the importance of cultivating love and compassion" (Bstan 123). No matter what this woman believes she should see that this man has obviously suffered enough for his wrong doing to have become a law abiding citizen, to say the least, once again.
Mrs. Jones is made to suffer no more than is necessary for her to learn from her mistakes. Obviously Mr. Thompson has suffered enough to learn from his. The Dalai Lama speaks of the three phenomena that are the unavoidable forms of suffering; sickness, old age and death.
