Herbal Essence Ad
Everywhere you go advertising is all around us. It is important to study as it tells us about how the mind reacts to pictures, colors, and words and how the right mix of these tools can subconsciously force us into buying products that we would usually not consider buying. Rance Crain states: “Only eight percent of an ad’s message is received by the conscious mind; the rest is worked and reworked deep within the recesses of the brain, where a product’s positioning and repositioning takes shape.”(Kilbourne 74) An “Herbal Essence” shampoo ad uses many different advertising tactics to sell their products. The wording, coloring, and even the placement of the bottle all play into the advertisers plot to get people to buy the product; the whole ad leans towards being “natural.” The main picture in the advertisement is of the bottle at an angle with the shampoo exploding out of the top into flowers. The advertisement has tried to create a natural image with the use of appropriate colors and words while also suggesting excitement and fun. This is achieved by using several different slogans to appeal to a variety of different people. Someone may be interested in the product because of its natural properties, herbs, mountain spring water etc, or alternatively someone might purchase the shampoo for a “totally organic experience”. Just remember “the advertisers aren’t evil. They are just doing their job, which is to sell a product” (Kilbourne 86). It is our job to read into the ads and understand them more completely. The name of the product is “Herbal Essences” which suggests that the shampoo contains lots of different natural essences. The ad is fill with words such as “natural botanicals,” “pure,” “organic,” and “herbal.” By using these words they are able to push on the concept of being “natural.” The word “herbal” means to relate to herbs.
