The differences in attitudes of young people today is directly related with why current popular music is so much more profane than the popular music of the past. Being a rebel has always been “cool”, but it was never as popular as it is now. In effect it is cool to be bad. Music of the present is based on being the bad guy as opposed to the music of the past being based on having a good time. One popular oldies dance was the Twist. Now, instead of twisting we have mosh pits, which is basically a whole bunch of people beating each other up. Popular music has lost the element of fun which it always had before. One great example of how music has changed so greatly is in the rap by the artist Eminem titled Words are Weapons. In the song Eminem sings of how, “My words are weapons, I use them to crush my opponents, I never show no emotion…” (Mathers). Our generation’s music has become more about venting frustrations and defining a personality than about having a good time. Music from thirty years ago was healthier for children to listen to because above all else it was just about enjoying yourself, which is what music should promote.
