A Place In My Family

In a family setting, I along with everyone else have our own place or role incorporated in it. For me, since I am the oldest sibling, I am looked upon to uphold many responsibilities. My only other sibling, that, has Downs Syndrome, which prevents him from contributing much around the household and the farm itself. So, that leaves me to pick up the slack as you could say. For being the sole helper at our farm, it requires me to wake up bright and early at five o clock every morning to complete the morning chores of feeding the cattle, calves, emus, ponies, cats, and dogs. At this time of the season, the fall harvest requires me to stay up late most nights to help drive the combine, control the input and speed of the grain dryer, drive the grain truck, and plow the fields. I never look at the situation as being a negative experience; instead I always look at it as an opportunity to learn new things. My attitude towards house and farm chores is greatly reflective of how I was brought up starting during early childhood. It isn't always easy to be counted on because a lot of the times it takes away from the time to go to a movie with friends or a party with my girlfriend. But, I always remind myself that there will be other days and my friends and girl friend will be there still when I"m ready to go out. I have a responsibility which needs to be upheld to support the family and help them all I can. I think the role of me being the helper in the family assists me to become a better rounded person with a wide data base of knowledge from different aspects of life. In the end, I don't only help my family out, but aid in my own development in the long run.
