Things Fall Apart
In this book report I am going to simply summarize the story and tell important things and people in the book. The main character in the book is a man named Onkonkwo. Onkonkwo is a rich and somewhat successful man of the Umuofia clan. The Umuofia clan is in lower Nigeria that is part of separate villages. A struggle that Onkonkwo deals with in the book is his father who was a man that in Onkonkwo’s eyes was a lazy and cowardly man. Onkonkwo is a clansman of the tribe and has son named Nwoye, and thinks that he is lazy and worries that his son will become a failure like his won father Unoka. Later in the story Onkonkwo wins a fifteen-year-old boy for the tribe. Onkonkwo treats the boy like his own son and takes charge of him. The boy’s name was Ikemefuna and becomes somewhat attached to him, but Onkonkwo does not show any emotion for fear of looking weak. Ikemefuna also takes liking to Onkonkwo the man who he now calls father. During the week of peace, Onkonkwo beats one of his wives, breaking the peace of the sacred week. Although Onkonkwo tries to make up for his mistake, the rest of the village is still somewhat upset. Later in the book, the village has locusts come to Umuofia. The village thinks that this
After this, Onkonkwo is very sad, and cannot sleep or eat. He then visits his friend Obierika and feels a little better, but not much. After this the District Commissioner goes to Onkonkwo’s home to find that Onkonkwo has hanged himself. To the villagers suicide is a very bad sin. To the villager’s customs, no one in the village is allowed to touch Onkonkwo’s body. The District Commissioner is writing a book on his time in Africa and decides that the story of Onkonkwo’s death and rebellion would make a great paragraph or two in his book. The District Commissioner has decided on what to name his book, and has called it The Pacification of the Primitive Tribes of the Lower Nigeria. The death of Ogbuefi Ezeudu is announced to the surrounding villages with drums. Onkonkwo feels guilty that about his death because the last time he had seen him was when he told Onkonkwo that Ikemefuna needed to die. At Ogbuefi’s funeral, the men fired their guns, when accidentally, Onkonkwo shot and killed Ogbuefi Ezeudu’s 16 year old son. I think that this story has a very fitting title, Things Fall Apart, because that is exactly what happens. Onkonkwo has a great life and slow
