Multi-Layered Defense Systems and Data Protection

Abstract This paper will explore the role of defense in depth security procedures in improving computer and data security. It outlines step-by-step approaches for improving security by defining risks, assessing vulnerabilities, and implementing measures to reduce the likelihood that vulnerabilities may be exploited. The use of a defense-in-depth structure mandates that layered security mechanisms be used to increase security of the system as a whole. If an attack causes one security mechanism to fail, other mechanisms may still provide the necessary security to protect the system. This research will underscore the important role the implementation of a defense in depth system can play for organizations which collects and store important consumer details. There is a basic understanding of some of the fundamentals of a Defense in Depth system. These understandings range from sequencing attacks and activities, to robust work on insider threat that remains ongoing. While there are many

Daddy by Plath - A Paradoxical Relationship

Sylvia Plath's poem "Daddy," emphasizes the ill-fated relationship between a woman and her deceased father. The poet conveys her paradoxical feelings for the one man who she worshipped during her young years, but feared his malicious influence and domination after his death. Throughout the poem, Plath uses German inferences and simplistic language in order to escape the oppression of her father, but preserve the idealistic mirror of him. The poem begins with an almost childlike tone, misleading the reader on the upcoming subject matter. The first line echoes a nursery rhyme, feeling like a charm against some brooding curse: "You do not do, you do not do/ anymore black shoe" (lines 1-2). Metaphorically, the shoe is a trap, smothering the foot. The adjective "black" suggests the idea of death, thus it can relate to a coffin. The speaker feels a submissiveness and entrapment by her father. In an attempt to rid herself of the restriction in her own life, sh

Overview of the Walgreen Company

Walgreens is a lead competitor in the drugstore industry. Throughout the years, Walgreens has developed a very well known and respectable name for itself by implementing various effective retail strategies. Like any company in a competitive market, Walgreens has its share of opportunities and threats and has remained at the top of the industry. This company must stay up to date with the trends of society to provide a wide variety of products and services to its very diverse customer base. Many customers are loyal to this company because of their frequent trips to the pharmacy; however, it's a one stop shop for everyday items like snacks, school supplies, household items and greeting cards. The competitive pricing and friendly employees keep customers loyal to Walgreens even if they are not making frequent visits to the pharmacy. In 1901, a young man bought a small drugstore in Chicago. C. R. Walgreen's innovative ideas and unique hospitality enabled Walgreens to thrive and become Amer

Rabbinic Literature, Judaism and the Shema

Introduction Why should a Christian embark on an examination of rabbinic literature? Despite all the misunderstandings that Christians have about these Hebrew writings, there is still so much beauty to be discovered in the way Jewish people view life and God and the study scriptures. One of the ways to catch a glimpse of the beauty of Judaism is to study Jewish prayer. "In [Jewish] prayer the ultimate mystery of existence is invoked and addressed as if it shared in the life of humanity. There is an outreaching to that which is beyond human reach and a straining to extend the domain of meaning to that mystery." The most famous of all Jewish prayers is the liturgical prayer called the Shema. The Shema has greatly influenced Jewish lifestyle for millennia and also serves as a link to Christian theology when Jesus recited the Shema in response to being asked about the greatest commandment. To fully understand and appreciate the Shema, the best place to start is to investigate wh

Imagination and Reality in Life of Pi

Thesis Statement In this paper, I will show how Pi, in the film "Life of Pi," deals with imagination vs. reality. Introduction The film the Life of Pi is a story of a young boy named Pi who is stranded at sea for 227 days on a lifeboat after the ship he is traveling on with his family sinks in a storm. Pi is the only one to survive the wreck along with multiple animals, most notably a Bengal tiger, who he shares the lifeboat with the entire time. Pi tells a story with unbelievable events and visuals. At the end of the film, Pi is interviewed by a pair of Japanese officials looking to write a report about the shipwreck. They ask Pi multiple times what really happened, and in response Pi tells a story that would be far more believable and horrific. In Pi's second story the lifeboat doesn't include the Zebra, Hyena, Orangutan, or Tiger. Instead the lifeboat is occupied by Pi, his mother, a sailor, and the cook. Ultimately, the two reporters choose to believe Pi's animal story. Did Pi survive at sea with a Bengal tiger and other animals fr

Thematic Essay on Dante's Inferno

In "The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri: The Inferno," Dante often uses love and romance as a theme to convey his message of Hell in The Inferno. The Inferno is epic that is about a telling of Dante through his Journey throughout Hell while being guided by Virgil. In the poem, Hell is shown as nine circles of suffering depending on what you did and serves as different levels of punishment and along in this journey, Dante understands the soul towards God along with the Inferno describing the nine circles of hell being Lucifer, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud, and treasury as he explores hell and meets different people along the way. Love plays a important aspect in "The Inferno" because without it, Dante wouldn't have been able to complete his journey without his guide who was sent by Beatrice. By Beatrice sending Virgil, it would mean that she still loves Dante and that she would still want Dante to be safe. The text states, "Love and w

Supporting Improved Reading Comprehension

As technology continues to become a staple of every-day learning, educators continue to integrate Assistive Technology (AT) tools into the classroom. Incorporating AT into the curriculum can provide for the student multiple means to complete their work and focus on achieving academic success. In the case of computer-based instruction, powerful applications can be used to complement the curriculum. AT provides a method to collect and analyze data, provide immediate feedback, and provide individualized instruction on the basis of the student's ability level and specific needs. Students with special educational needs are being educated in inclusive classrooms where grade-level performance is expected. As a result, educators are turning to AT as a means to deliver individualized instruction to students with diverse learning needs, abilities, and disabilities. Inclusion of a strategic AT program should be targeted towards assisting all students, regardless of subject area or age/grade le

Christian Rites of Baptism

Christianity was introduced into Africa in the last half of the 2nd Century AD, probably by missionaries from Rome, and then spread through the other African provinces. Baptism as the initiatory rite of Christianity holds the first place among the sacrament. The word baptism is derived from the Greek word "baptizo," to wash or to immerse. According to the bible, baptism is a rite or washing with water as a sign of religious purification and consecration. This rite was practiced frequently in the Old Testament and later in the New Testament for instance John the Baptist's "repentance for the forgiveness of sin ". In Matthew, chapter 3, we see Jesus shepherded in his ministry on earth by being baptized. Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized. He then went up out of the water, the heavens opened, and the spirit of god inclined on Him. And a voice from heaven said, "this is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased"" Matthew 3:13 (NIV). It symbolized a pure and clea

Causes of the American Revolution

The American Revolution was not caused by any one act of the British, instead it was a culmination of many things. From the colonies being exploited economically by the British Empire to pay off its war debts, the British imposing more and more regulations on the colonies, to the ever diminishing, self-governance of the colonies. Over time, these factors pushed the colonies to declare themselves independent from Great Britain, and to fight for their freedom from them. The road to revolution began with the ending of the French and Indian war. After the war, the British Empire had incurred massive debts and saw the colonies as a perfect way to pay them off. The first tax to come was the sugar act. This placed a tax on non-British molasses. While there had been previous taxes in place on such goods, this is the first one the British enforced, which undermined the lucrative smuggling business into the colonies. While this did upset the colonies, this was far from war starting. Many saw it

A Captain's Duty by Richard Phillips

Captain Richard Phillips is a 54 year old Merchant Marine captain with a wife and two college-aged children. Captain Phillips was in charge of the ship, Maersk Alabama, in April 2009, when it was carrying relief supplies around the Horn of Africa from Oman to Mombasa, Kenya. This area is notorious for Somali pirates, which work in small groups and are able to board large cargo ships because, unlike the crews on the cargo ships, they are armed. Once these pirates board the ship and take control, they generally demand million-dollar ransoms from the ship's owner. When four of these pirates boarded Captain Phillips' ship, he ordered most of his crew to hide in the engine room. After conversing with the pirates, and taking them around the ship to unsuccessfully look for the rest of the crew, Phillips offered them $30,000 cash from the ship's safe and a lifeboat to take themselves

Emily Dickinson - Poetry Analysis

In Emily Dickinson's "There's a certain slant of light," the poet provides yet another glimpse into her world of patriarchal oppression and the overall entropy of the seasons. In this poem, even light is oppressive – the contrast between light and dark is shown to be quite close to the contrast between life and meaning. Through her use of descriptive imagery, syntax and form, Emily Dickinson takes a short poem and manages to eke a tremendous amount of meaning out of it, likening light to the reminder that death will be upon us eventually. Dickinson's level of descriptiveness in these passages helps to evoke the weariness and weight of winter; the kind of light you get in "winter afternoons oppresses, like the heft Of cathedral tunes" (lines 2-4). Here, religion is likened to pain; hymns are shown to give

Frankenstein and the Monster

In Mary Shelley's Romanticism-era classic novel Frankenstein, the main characters, Victor Frankenstein and the Monster, are linked in a complex, multidimensional relationship. On one hand, the Monster is subservient to his creator, who is the only man with enough knowledge to create another of his kind. On the other hand, however, Victor is subservient to his creation, because it is physically stronger than he and able to murder his whole circle of family and friends without putting forth much effort. Their relationship is not marked by a simple hero-villain pattern. Neither of these men are exactly heroes, but neither of them are anti-heroes. Mary Shelley sympathizes with both while condemning them both simultaneously. Through Frankenstein, she shows the readers that good and evil are not always easy to determine, and that human beings have both of these qualities within themselves. However, readers tend to want to label the characters of a novel as either good or evil, hero or vill

Overview of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

In Emily Bronte's beloved novel, "Wuthering Heights," conflicts between the major characters are evident, but what is a little less apparent are the contrasts and comparisons between the characters that bring them together. At the beginning of the novel, the reader is introduced to several of the main characters and the different households they are brought up in. Catherine Earnshaw and Isabella Linton are a part of these dissimilar homes and lead different lives through their childhood, marriages, and motherhood. Although the two characters are born in the same year, 1765, this is one of the only similarities in their childhoods. Catherine and her brother, Hindley, are raised by their father at Wuthering Heights, a working class home. Bronte describes Catherine from a young age as being a "wild, wicked slip"" (Bronte 51) and she never completely loses this attitude. Heathcliff, Catherine's lover and cousin, adventures off with her to visit Thrushcross Grange, a home to a higher cla

Charles Krauthammer on Obama and Terrorism

"Terrorism is speech - speech that gathers its audience by killing innocents as theatrically as possible." Paul Brousse Political commentator, Charles Krauthammer, talks about Obama's use (or lack of) of the word terrorism to describe the Boston Marathon. In Obama's first announcement to the media he didn't use the word terrorism. The next day he described it an "act of terrorism" even though nothing had changed over night. Krauthammer disagrees with Obama's statement that any bombing targeted at civilians is terrorist attack and states that the attack "must have a political purpose." Krauthammer argues that because the motive that was behind the attack is still unknown, there is no evidence to support that the bomber was a terrorist Krauthammer suggests that reason the President was afraid to use the word "terrorism" in connection with the Boston attacks is because of the m

The Fighter - The True Story

When you choose to watch a biographical movie, you must always keep in mind that there is reality, and then there is Hollywood's interpretation of reality. "The Fighter" tells the story of the comeback and ultimate success of junior welterweight boxer Micky Ward, played by Mark Wahlberg. "The Fighter" may be an ordinary sports biography film, but as a boxing movie it's "unusual for the simple reason that it's in favor of the sport"" (Newman and Bell). For 'Irish' Micky Ward, a boxing career is an opportunity to get out of his bad neighborhood in Lowell, Massachusetts, away from his smothering family and achieve a generally better life that will not involve any of the usual traps of movie boxing, such as brain damage, injury, or that one knockout punch too many that leads to a last-scene death in the ring. In the film, Micky's older brother Dicky Eklund, played by Christian Bale, has already given up his own shot at a boxing career after his momentary high of knocking down Sugar Ray L

A Visual Art Critique

On October 4th, 2013, my family and I had the pleasure of going to the Dallas Museum of Art. My mother and I had never been to the DMA, but had heard it was a good experience. Since we live two hours away from the metroplex, we were excited to use my assignment as an opportunity for a fun family outing. My initial impression of the DMA was very good. The decor of the building was very modern and formal, and was continuous throughout the entire building. Right from the start, the decor enhanced my curiosity with a waterfall and a unique, thought-provoking statue. Although the building was very clean and never distracted from the art, the architecture did not lend itself to being easy to navigate. However, this could be on purpose so as to encourage the viewer to linger at each piece instead of racing through the museum, as we tend to do in life. There was plenty of space to contemplate a piece of artwork, which I deem necessary for any prominent museum as it is impossible to thoroughl

Microcredit in Rural Bangladesh

Introduction Microcredit, founded by Muhammad Yunus in 1983 in Bangladesh, is a method that aims to decrease the poverty rate by providing microloans to members of the bank. In rural Bangladesh, there are many struggling working adults that are unable to support their families sufficiently. The practice of microcredit is essentially the extension of microloans to impoverished villagers who lack employment. There are three main providers for microcredit programs in Bangladesh: Grameen Bank, Rural Development RD-12, and the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee BRAC. In rural Bangladesh, women face many gender inequalities and are treated with an unequal amount of respect in comparison to men. Many women play a minimal role in providing necessities for their family. The dominant males typically abuse their wives because they perceive them to be essentially useless. These women join microcredit banks in hopes of overcoming poverty, gender inequalities, and living
