The novel Like Water For Chocolate is filled with many metaphors and similes. One that is important to the plot and the theme is the simile "She could pick up the watermelon and give it a single blow against a stone, in a particular stop, and like magic the watermelon rind would open like the petals of a flower ... since she was a child, and she still hadn't quite finished her off" (49). This relates to the plot because Mama Elena has been torturing Tita by keeping the tradition of the youngest daughter having to take care of her mother till she dies and not letting her marry the one she love...
