A lot of people head off to college not having any idea to what they are getting themselves into. To these people, college may be a shocking new experience. I was not too shocked because I had been anticipating the transition to college for a long time. I am no longer under the control of my parents, and I am able to do what I want or feel like doing. I am now able to develop a better sense of self discipline. It is also a new type of atmosphere in which I can grow and learn. College did not come as a shock to me, but many things are different from the way they were at home.

Being away from my parents is a liberating experience. I don't have them breathing down my neck making sure that I have done everything that I needed to do. Now that I am away from parents I have much more freedom that I am able to exercise. I can stay up as late as I want, or I can stay out all night. If I decide to do nothing but play video games for a week, there is nothing my parents can do about it. I no longer need to ask if I can go somewhere and have the chance that I am told no. There are no more mandatory chores that I am assigned to have done before I am allowed to go out with friends. When I make a mistake, I am not lectured by my parents. All my mistakes are mine to deal with and except consequences for. The only down side would probably be that I have to keep my living space clean and do my own laundry. My mother would clean up the house and do my laundry for me. I also took for granite a good home cooked meal.

Now that I am at college and away from home, I have to develop more self control and self discipline. There is no longer anyone to making sure that I am getting up on time for classes or what I may have to do in the morning. This has already proven to be something that I have difficulty with, and that I need to improve on. I need to learn to get things done before everything piles up on each other and becomes an overload.
