             Effect of colonialism.
             The colonization effected Haiti in several ways. By importing such a large number of slaves, the Haitian culture was shaped by the religious practices of voodoo that the slaves carried with them. These practices depicted a certain way of life for a lot of African tribes, and now they began dominating Haitian culture. More significantly, the French were persistently harsh towards the slaves, and feelings of hatred flourished. The slaves developed a sense of inferiority, one that becomes embedded through years of reinforcement. Through the sexual relations of slave owners and slaves, a new class of mulattos arose. The institution of slavery divided the country into three main classes: white, mulatto, and black. The elites from the opposing classes have been fighting for power until this day. .
             Revolution.
             France relied heavily on the trade and employment created in the small island, but it was only profitable because of the slave institution. Such a demoralizing practice, especially nearing the French revolution, was unsustainable, and:.
             "Out of the hate engendered by local uprisings out of the cruelty of repression and the misery of the entire people, the independence of Haiti was born. The French Revolution gave all these ambitions and all this hate a chance to crystallize into a revolt which, after fifteen years of fighting, made Haiti a free country." (16, Metraux).
             It was on January 1st, 1804 that Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the independence of Haiti. At the cost of their own blood, the Haitians had fought the European colonizers, and won their liberty. .
             Dessalines.
             Haiti became the first black republic to declare its independence. Dessalines" abolishment of slavery and his attempt to unite all the races within the nation set the pattern for the future development of Haiti. After forming a tenuous alliance to fend off the colonizers, the "ancient libres", consisting mostly of mulattoes, and the "nouveaux libres", almost entirely black, faced one another over matters of property ownership.
