The Rise of Technology and Social Media

 

            Teenagers and young adults are the generation that understands the technology that's being developed. Technology is changing rapidly every day. Cell phones, laptops, tablets, anything you can think of that connects to the internet has made it easy for teens to connect and check their news-feed. Cell phones and tablets can download applications to them and as it can automatically connect to the internet, it is easy access the apps when they are not at home. Teenagers twelve to seventeen, seventy-five percent of them have cell phone. .
             Of the 75%, 83% use their phone to take pictures, 64% percent send pictures to other people, 60% use their phones to play music, and 46% use their phones to play games (Gahran). The average teen has over two hundred and one friends on Facebook (Lenhart). In a classroom setting, when teens get bored, they get their phones out and check Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram, and it distracts them from their school work. Students who get on social networking sites while studying for school score twenty percent lower on tests. Students who use social media have an average grade point average of 3.06 versus non-users who have an average great point average of 3.82" (Kirschner). .
             College students who average about one hundred and six minutes on Facebook their grades drop zero point twelve points for every ninety three minutes above the average time spent on Facebook (Daly). It is not just the act of getting on the phone and checking the news-feed, it is also a way of people creating a conversation about it. In a group of friends, you may over hear them talking about what so and so put on Facebook or Twitter.
             It is the same with teens or young adults that have jobs. It is a constant addiction, on the job, or on lunch break, it's the one thing they think about, they automatically get their phones and check their newsfeed. It catches the eye to younger people because they can learn quickly on how to use it.
