Death and the Grief of Survivors

Grief that is overwhelming can have a negative impact on both mind and body. It could leave a person in a bad mental state of mind, which could make them end up in a mental hospital. Physically it can leave a person at a standstill, because of a lost love one that was devastating. "Somatic disturbances. Grief affects people physically as well as mentally. It is normal for people to have sleep problems, changes in appetite, digestive difficulties, dry mouth, or fatigue after a loss. Occasional bouts of restlessness and agitation are also common." (The Normal) We see this to be true, because Didion has a panic attack. It left her unstable, unable to think and worries about everything. She worries that her sandal catches on the sidewalk, that she will fall and that no one can take her to the emergency room. She begins to sleep with the nightlight on during the night. (Kakutani).
It is uneasy for someone to move on after a loss of a love one. People find it hard to move on after a love one because in their mind they are still here. A person who still have belongings from the a lost love, still keep them because that is mostly what that person wears on a daily basis, and sometimes it makes them feel like there is still a connection. Yearning after a lost love one could cause that person to kill themselves to be with that lost love one. They feel so bad that they end up doing something really bad or negative. (The Normal).
A person belief can influence their response in losing a love one, in a positive way. Someone that is a Christian believes when a Christian dies, they go to heaven. They also believe that when a love one dies, they are not hurting or will be in pain anymore. They will see them again soon in heaven. Due to a person's beliefs, their religion can change the outlook from negative to positive. We see this to be true because Didion's belief in geology helps her deal with the grieving process.
