Full Name - Hazel Grace Lancaster.
Hazel is a 17 year old girl with lung cancer which is stopped from spreading by a miraculous medication. Her mood changes throughout the novel. In the beginning of the story she is a depressed girl and she thinks that she can live without friends just reading. She rarely leaves the house, reads the same book again and again, rarely eats, and spends all of her time thinking about death. She has so many questions in her mind even about her favorite book "An Imperial Affliction " by Peter Van Houten. She sees herself as a grenade. "I'm a grenade. I just want to stay away from people and read books and think and be with you guys because there's nothing I can do about hurting you; you're too invested, so just please let me do that, okay? I'm not depressed. I don't need to get out more. And I can't be a regular teenager, because I'm a grenade" (Page: 99. Hazel to her parents). She doesn't want her feelings for someone to get in the way of the fact that she would most likely die at a young age. Hazel doesn't believe that a life needs to be extraordinary to have importance or to mean something, she wishes to be an ordinary teenager.
