Book Report - Lord of the Flies

 

            The book "Lord of The Flies " by William Golding is about a plane carrying a group of english boys because there country is at war. The plane wrecks on a remote island leaving the boys to set up their own rules and survive on their own. The boys on the island represent society as a whole. Theres Piggy who represents intellectuality and always trying to do the right thing. Ralph who represents politics and social order but he fails to control the evil within the rest of the boys. Jack represents a dictator and ignorance, he is also a hunter and soldier on the island. Roger is a symbol of pure evil and is responsible for Piggy's death later in the book. Simon is a christ like figure who knows the truth but unlike christ who shared his knowledge then sacrificed himself, Simon was sacrificed against his will before he could do so.
             .
             The story starts out with Piggy and Ralph getting themselves back together after the crash. None of the other boys are anywhere to be found. They find a conch shell on the ground and Ralph blows it. The rest of the boys start to come out onto the beach from the jungle. They gather and decide to elect a leader. Ralph wins the vote but Jack really wanted to win, so Ralph assigns Jack and the rest of the choir to be the hunters for the group of boys. .
             .
             The hunters set out to explore the island. They reach the other side but there is nothing but water on all sides of them. They found no clue of any human civilization, meaning that they have a island all to themselves with no one to rule them but themselves. On their way back to the beach they find a wild pig trapped in vines. Ralph goes to kill it but could not bring himself to do the deed and the pig escapes and runs away. Ralph says that next time he will kill without hesitation. .
             .
             The hunters return from their expedition of the island and gather for a meeting with the rest of the boys. They establish a rule for meetings, that is that you can only speak if you are holding the conch shell.
