Homelessness - An American Problem

 

            Homeless is the social problem which is easy to be seen but hard to be solved. Especially in the United States, people believe that life is a paradise. However, that is wrong. Just like other countries, some social issues exists in America. Some serious matters like same-sex marriage, gun violation, or tax avoiding. Otherwise, one matter that has been lasting for many decades is homelessness. According to the news from the internet or other social media, the homeless issue seems to be less mentioned .Consciously that matter seems to be forgotten. Despite of many aids from both government and communities, the rate of homeless people keeps increasing every year. For better and wealthier society of the United States, the government should work on forming a way for getting rid of homelessness by providing housing. .
             There are many reasons for a person to be homeless; however, one of the main causes of the homeless is the financial problem. "[T]he House and the Senate are considering an expansion of the definition to include people precariously housed: those doubled up with friends or relatives or living day to day in motels, with money and options running out" (Swarns). Since the financial depression hit the US economic in 2009, the US government has extended the new definition about homeless. Following the years after that recession, many families have had to face the financial crisis. Paying bills for their house, car and credit is an arduous task for them. Consequently, they have been losing their properties and spending their life on the street. Also, based on the article" Homelessness", there are two categories of homeless that is long-term homeless and short-term homeless. Housing and Urban Development determine the long-lasting group is "who has either been homeless for a year or more or has been homeless at least four times in the last three years, and who struggles with a "disabling" physical or mental condition, often including drug or alcohol abuse" ("Homelessness").
