This is Not the World for Me

Growing up I was not raised to notice skin color or to a judge a person because of their background. So, I did not think twice when I fell in love with a man of a different race, skin color and background then myself. All three of my children are biracial and I am doing my best to raise them the way that I was. Except, I never realized racism still existed until people in public started treating us differently. God created everyone different for a reason and it is time that we start treating people equally.
Even though I am white, I experience racism almost everyday of my life. All three of my children are mixed, black and white. I am constantly asked what race they are or how can I handle doing their hair everyday. I've even had people ask my why I wanted to have black children instead of white children. My daughters are even treated different by their peers. Children their own age ask why they look different. My daughters have even been called derogatory words by children their own age. When I learned of this, I was appalled that young kids had heard that word spoken before but also knowingly used the word like it was not a problem. Parents should not be teaching their children to treat their peers or strangers in this way. My fianc and father of my daughters is black. I do not see the color of his skin though, I see him as my future husband, father of my daughters, a hard-working and supportive man. But when we go out in public people stare at us, point and make derogatory comments or assume the worst about us. I love all three of my children more than anything. However, there are days I regret bringing them into such a hateful and racist world. I worry about their safety and their future everyday.
We learn about so many things during our formative years through attending school, church or other activities in our lives. To this day I can not tell you one time I needed to know what the square root of a given number is, how to solve a mathematical equation for A, B or C or what the molecular density of an atom is; although I am sure many jobs you do need to know that.
