Advantages of Diversity in the Workforce

There are many advantages to diversity in the workplace. Some of these advantages include being able to market your company better, being open to more opportunities because your company is diverse, and having more cultural backgrounds so you can be open to many different views. There are more advantages but these are the main advantages that people use when they hear about competitive advantages. Diversity is a key issue in this age of time. A few years ago, diversity was there, but there was not as much emphasis on it as it is now. Now a day a company or government agency cannot exist without diversity in its core development. An aspect of diversity that many companies could benefit from is by having both senior employees and young employees in their firm. There are many benefits by having senior workers in your organization such as: mentoring younger co-workers, experience, and more committed. As there are benefits to having senior workers, there are pros to having younger workers in the organization. For example, they mentor older coworkers, come up with modern ideas, and are generally more enthusiastic. .
As mentioned earlier it is important to have seniors in your organization. By mentoring younger co-workers, it allows the younger generation workers to enter into the firm and develop a sense of belonging. In addition, mentoring allows the younger generation workers to learn about the organization's norms and goals so they can have longevity in the company. Early research concluded that mentors are typically 8 to 15 years older than their protégé (Levinson, Darrow, Klein, Levinson & McKee, 1978). Seniors also come with experience in their field or occupation. Since they have worked in the workforce longer, they typically develop skills in their occupation. "Furthermore, there is evidence that older employees may be more committed and less likely to exhibit voluntary absences and turnover than younger employees" (Warr, 1994).
