The Power of Silence

There is something incredibly beautiful in the way two souls can be together in absolute silence, but completely understand what one another is going through at that moment in their life. I have no idea if everyone is fortunate enough to experience this at least once in their lifetime, however I am confident that I share this type of connection with another. It only makes sense that deeply emotional situations would bring out this connection between two people and that is what happened to me. Silence is pure; it draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each other can sit and be content without speaking. .
The person I share this connection with is Travis, who I dated for over a year and is still a very special part of my life. From the very beginning we quickly formed a unique bond. It was obvious that we were at ease with each other and never felt awkward or disconnected from one another. We shared times in the car just simply listening to music and enjoying each others' company without one single word. We got each other. He knew when I was sad, angry, happy, etc. as I did with him. Inexplicably we knew exactly when the other needed silence and someone to just understand. It is almost as if we had conversations through our silence, completely and wholly understanding the others' feelings and demonstrating the depth of our knowledge of each other. .
Almost immediately he shared with me that his mother was terminally ill. He wanted me to know before we got any closer so I didn't feel any pressure or obligation. As close as we had already become, I wanted to do anything and everything to help him and his family go through this rough time in their lives. Exactly three months into our relationship, I received a text message from Travis, "I wanted you to know my mother has passed away. I am fine but I needed to let you know." I replied to him but did not allow myself to hover over him and cling to him because I knew he was hearing from many well-intentioned friends and family throughout the night.
