Asian Music in American Culture

For this concert, I want to focus on Asian music in American culture. Many people consider Asian music as something that is not included in American music or something that will never be put into any mainstream America music genre. This stereotype may result from the fact that Asian Americans were not a major ethic group present in the United States during the early years of this country; as a result, elements from Asian culture are isolated. Currently, it is really hard to find successful Asian artists presented in main genres such as jazz, rock, hip-hop, etc. Asian artists are often overlooked when it comes to representing 'American music'. .
The reason I want to present this concert is because that, since America is nation built by immigrants and premised upon the tenet that it can be a home for anyone who wants to live in a free, democratic country, plus the fact that the Asian population in the U.S. is growing rapidly, when considering American music, we should not constrain our considerations to only music that comes from 'black' and/or 'white', but also try to include Asian music as part of its important component. Only when it is considered seriously as 'American', will Asian music be truly listened to here. This will help break several stereotypes and illustrate the point that Asian American's culture is changing just as much as are Asian countries. They don't just have traditional things and Asian music is much more than 'gang nam style' and sexy Asian girls: Asian artists also produce new, fresh, exciting, serious and cool music.

             Organizing Concept .
First I want to present artists who did break several Asian music stereotypes in the past to show similar meaning for this concert. Next, I will invite some Asian artists who are popular and representing misleading 'Asian music' in America now, to illustrate the point that many Americans still view Asian music through colored spectacles.
