Genetically Engineered Babies

We cannot simply create life in this manner because of a request; there are just too many unknowns involved. Not only are there the common moral issues, but there may also be ulterior motives involved. Some parents and doctors, for example, may create a child to act as an organ-donating factory (Tuhus-Dubrow 4). Children should exist and be cherished for themselves, not for what they can do to help others. To create them for a purpose other than to live a normal healthy life would be immoral and inhumane. There may be some credible arguments for having healthy children help others, but no argument should have the right to take away any child's right to live a happy life. Imagine if that child were your own. If you intentionally had your own child suffering for someone else, then what right do you have to call yourself a parent? There are many other options to go through, such as donations from others. Ultimately, there really is no reason to "construct" a child just to use him to help someone else. Words simply cannot express the immorality in doing so. Yet, if engineering "designer babies" is legalized, there are bound to be people who will take advantage of the technology and abuse its benefits. However, it is not just the process of using children as tools that is amoral, but also the process of unnaturally creating human life. Parents, despite what they may say, love their children exactly the way they are. Children may have imperfections, develop bad habits, and even cause their parents distress and embarrassment, but parents nonetheless love their children. Similarly, I personally know quite a few couples who, as a result of old age or some other problem, cannot naturally have kids. However, they do not resort to in vitro fertilization; instead, they choose to adopt overseas in countries such as China where millions of orphans wait. Although a couple has the convenience of choosing who to adopt, they simply go with who they first get.
