The acronym T.U.L.I.P. describes the full meaning of what Calvinism really is. Total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace and perseverance of the saints are all grouped together to state that there is no denying that Adam's sin will affect all and God's predestined selection will be the only ones saved. Through faith, practice and belief of this theory you will be one of those "predestined chosen ones". Anyone who tested this theory would be considered crazy. This theory sounds accurate and somewhat maybe believable but with the knowledge we have now it seems like they were the crazy ones. Maybe they chose to believe John's theory simply because eternal security of God sounds pretty promising and makes you feel better about where your life is leading you. However the reality is that there is always room for reason and questionable theories that lead into the era of Benjamin Franklin's enlightenment. .
William Bradford, along with the other pilgrims were also strong believers in the idea that God was in their journey through life. In chapter seven of his book he writes, "we might humble ourselves before our God, and seek of him a right way for us, and for our children, and for all substance pouring out our prayers to the Lord with great fervency" (McMichael and Leonard 52). Another interesting quote from the next chapter about their voyage to Cape Cod is, "this young man with a grievous disease, of which he died in a desperate manner, thus his curses light on his own head, and it was an astonishment to all his fellows for they noted it to be the just hand of God upon him" (McMichael and Leonard 53). Pilgrims actually believed that the disease was sent from God, instead of just thinking that it was bad luck. It is one thing to pray for God's help but Calvinists crossed another whole level believing that God could control them here on Earth.
