Slavery in the Fields of America

Their hesitation gives advantage to their growers as they try their best to benefit themselves from these poor people (Rodriguez, Delwiche, and Kasoosji 602). .
Farm workers have no right to bargain with their growers for basic rights and humane conditions. Erik Nicholson states, "Growers feel they can do whatever they want" (Smith). Apart from this, growers think that bargaining with the workers will motivate immigrants to come to United States illegally as these people will take advantage of bargaining and this will violate the Immigration laws. The other reason why the growers are against bargaining is that they believe raising wages, will lead to an increase in food prices which will cause troubles to the Americans. Smith sums up the counter argument of growers by mentioning that, "Opponents counter that collective bargaining rights will reward 'illegals' for violating immigration laws, drive up food prices, and otherwise plow under American culture" (Smith).
Bargaining is a basic right that should be given to all the workers whether they work for multinational company or a farm company. Living in United States all the workers should have a freedom of speech and press. But unfortunately growers have no motivation to compromise with their workers and there are no laws for protection of these workers (Smith). .
Raising wages for farm workers will not affect an average American. Americans spend very less amount of their income on food, the average American family only spends ten percent of their income on food. An example by David Masumoto who is a writer and a growers clarifies that giving a little boost on wages, will not have an impact on an American life, he described it in his poem that back than in 1961 the price of a box of peaches was two dollars and in 2007 the same box of peaches costs the same (Rodriguez 605). And if the growers does give a boost, it will not make a huge difference in the amount of money people spends on fruits.
