Usually, the father is at work and does not have enough time or energy to spend with the family. Mothers usually stay at home and raise the children. They also take care of the home. However, many have to work due to the economy strain. Children are expected to maintain exceptional grades. They are to admire and respect their parents, similar to that of other cultures. Extended families are not uncommon in Japan. (Countries and Their Cultures, 2014).
The diet of the Japanese mainly consists of foods such as rice, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, and small amounts of meat. A lot of the plates have sweet sake or soy sauce. In the replacement of fish, sometimes vegetables will be used. Tea and rice are used a lot in most of the meals. An increasingly popular food is Western-style. The young usually eat Western-style dishes. Some of the most popular Japanese foods include: noodles, sashimi (raw fish), soup, tofu, miso, and curried rice. During popular occasions, sushi or norimaki (sushi wrapped in dry seaweed) is used. (Countries and Their Cultures, 2014).
People of Japan.
Japan has a tremendous population of 127.1 million people and growing at the annual rate of 0.02 percent. Japan also has an extremely dense population. Over half of the population lives in an urban area. Around 50 percent live in Tokyo, Nagoya, or Osaka alone. The result of dense population is a very high cost of living there. Also, Japan suffers from a lack of cheap housing in urban areas. (East and Southeast Asia: Japan, 2014) Japan's official language is Japanese. (Japan - Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette, 2014. Japanese sometimes use two of the phonetic alphabets: hiragana and katakana. The third phonetic alphabet is romaji, which is Roman letters. Japanese can be either written horizontally or vertically. Japanese is not the same as the Chinese language when spoken; however kanji looks the same as ideographs. (Countries and Their Cultures, 2014).
