Safeguarding.
In order to safeguard the service users against physical and emotional safety, appropriate use of equipment, I checked all the equipment which was going to be used by the service users that it was safe and would not harm them. They were some broken paintbrush and scissors which were not designed for arts and crafts. I also noticed that some of the equipment could be used by service users as weapons against others. I reported this to the senior carers who I was working with and they took and disposed the equipment appropriately. In addition to that, they were service users who had mental illness, they presented with confusion and every time if left unsupervised they would get up and go and start taking other service users' equipment or paintings and sometimes they would shout loud. I could see some service users were not comfortable, they frightened. I asked my colleague to sit close to those who had mental health illnesses so that if they get from their seats they could easily get redirected to their seats or taken away to another room where they can walk freely without disturbing or frightening others. .
Person-centered approach.
I demonstrated person-centered approached by allowing all the service users to freely choose the activities they wanted and not forcing anything onto them. I moved to on to discuss their likes and dislikes, one service user said she did not like red paint instead she liked blue paint. I assured her that np red paint was going to be given to her and she can have the blue paint. Some service users knew what they wanted however they thought they were not allowed to have other choices on how they wanted to carry out the activity. I explained to them that they had choices on what they wanted to do during the arts and crafts activity. Furthermore, I told them that the activity was for them not for me so it can be done according to their needs, wishes and preferences.
