Diversity

Growing up in a pretty much all white suburb thirty miles outside of Manhattan, I did not see much diversity within my town. However, I did make frequent trips into surrounding towns and more urban areas. This allowed me to see a myriad of people from different races and economic backgrounds. As I grew older, I started to realize the importance of these issues and made a conscious effort to learn about differences. As a result of my brother's new job, I began to go into New York City a lot. Now that has to be one of the most, if not the most, diverse city in the world. I found in enthralling that you could see so many different types of people within a few block radius. I"ll have to admit in the beginning it was a bit overwhelming, but after a few trips I learned to embrace the differences. .
The survey on women in the work force was not at all surprising to me. For a long time now, I have known that women in the workplace are treated unequally compared to men. However, this seems somewhat of an old practice and is not right. Women deserve the same pay as men do for the same tasks. The work environment must seek to overcome the past barriers of prejudice set by men in the past.              Personally, I have not had a lot of experience in economic diversity. I went to a public school; however, it was made up of mostly upper middle-class families. Basically, most of my friends were well off. I never was hesitant in asking a friend to go to the movies or go out to dinner; I knew he or she could afford it. When I came to this school, a lot of my new friends are not as well of as some of my friends from home. When I ask them if they want to order pizza of Chinese food, they often reply that they can't because they have to preserve their money.
