Despite the fact that sexual satisfaction is linked to all of the sexual exchange variables it only directly correlates sexual self-disclosure with levels of rewards and not costs. Using this data we can begin to make certain associations; sexual satisfaction is a product of the relationship between sexual exchanges (rewards) and sexual self-disclosure. The results from all these relational studies begin to suggest, "relationship satisfaction and sexual exchanges, jointly and fully, mediate the relationship between sexual self-disclosure and sexual satisfaction" (Byers, et al., 1999). .
Discussion: Byers and Demmons bring forth a rather compelling yet completely rational outlook on self-disclosure and its affects on predicting satisfaction in relationships. Despite the fact that the majority of its findings are rather overt and self explanatory, they give us a better insight to how sexual self-disclosure can affect various aspects of our relationship as well as give indications of even their partner's satisfaction. They found direct links of sexual self-disclosure with the quality of sexual communication, whether it be verbal or nonverbal. It established however, that sexual self-disclosure alone does not have a profound effect on sexual or relationship satisfaction without being tied to other variables such as self-disclosure in general or simply by being more intimate. This does not say that it cannot play an instrumental role, but rather suggests that sexual self-disclosure creates relationships between other factors measuring sexual satisfaction along with relationship and communicational satisfaction as well.
The article creates links between the different forms of satisfaction stating, "Individuals reporting more extensive sexual self-disclosure also reported greater relationship satisfaction. In turn, greater relationship satisfaction was associated with greater sexual satisfaction.
